Professor Matteo Santin

 

Professor of Tissue Regeneration at the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, University of Brighton

Matteo Santin is Professor of Tissue Regeneration at the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, University of Brighton, UK, Academic Lead for the Healthy Futures, the University framework for the research and enterprise in the field of health, and the Director of the Brighton Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Devices. Prof Santin holds a PhD in Biomaterials and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and he is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM 3 ). His career in biomedical research and teaching started in 1989 and it has been marked by significant achievements that were internationally recognised in 2005 by the European Society for Biomaterials who conferred him the Jean Leary Award. From 2008 to 2015 Prof. Santin was Associate Editor and later Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine, of which is currently Emeritus Editor.

Prof Santin has been the President of the European Society for Biomaterials from September 2013 to September 2017 and vice-chair of the ETP on Nanomedicine, Regenerative Medicine Working Group. He is a member of the Biomedical Application Division (IOM 3 ), member of the board of trustees of the Orthopaedic Research UK and of other international organisations. He is the founder and director of 2 start-up companies with a mission in biomaterials for biomedical applications and pre-clinical handling of cells, Brighton Wound Care Ltd and Tissue Click Ltd.

His scientific interests include natural biomaterials, synthetic biomimetic nano-structured biomaterials able to control tissue regeneration, and in vitro clinically-reflective models for the testing of biomaterials and tissue engineering constructs. He has published over 80 papers and filed 9 patents applications and participated in numerous R&D projects in collaboration with biomedical companies. Recently, he has led the establishment of the Healthy Futures Entrepreneurs Network that is part of the strategy of the Greater Brighton Economic Board.
