Professor Carol Jagger

 

AXA Professor of Epidemiology of Ageing at Newcastle University and Deputy

Carol Jagger is the AXA Professor of Epidemiology of Ageing at Newcastle University and Deputy Director of the Newcastle University Institute for Ageing. Her research programme spans demography and epidemiology with a focus on mental and physical functioning in ageing, including measurement, and she has been involved in the design or analysis of most of the major cohort studies of ageing in the UK and further afield. She is the leading UK researcher on healthy life expectancy, having provided evidence to various government committees on this topic. Her recent research on past and future trends in years with multi-morbidity and care needs is informing current debates on social care.

Carol sits on a number of national and international committees including: Public Health England Productive Healthy Ageing and Dementia Expert Advisory group, the Advisory Board for the University of Liverpool EPSRC Centre for Mathematics in Healthcare, the ONS National Population Projections Expert Advisory Panel, and the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care Expert Advisory group.  She is a Chartered Statistician and Chartered Scientist, a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and the Gerontological Society of America and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
